Chapter 1 : A Newer World

Chapter 1

The unremarkable grey building stood one-hundred stories tall. In a sea of other buildings equally unremarkable and of equal height. But over the main doors of this particular building, the sign read, THE AMERICAN CENTER OF HOMOSAPIAN PRODUCTION AND DISTRIBUTION. and a great plaque below had the globalists slogan SIMPLICITY, STERILITY, PEACE.

The ground floor was a single enormous room, grand, beautiful, and sterile, which all in all left it feeling hollow. White, grey, beige, and gleaming stainless steel. A single desk stood in front of the rows and rows of elevators. The left bank of elevators only went down to the twenty-five subterranean levels and the right only up, two elevators per twenty-five floors, eight elevators total.

The room lacked windows, which was common after all a view in any direction would only provide a look at the other identical pallid grey buildings. Instead, UV panels along the walls emitted light and a 95/5 ratio of UVA and UVB rays, the perfect imitation of sunlight. The tropical heat outside was tempered by the air-conditioned environment inside, the internal temperature optimized for health and functionality, a perfect twenty-one degrees celsius with exactly thirty percent humidity to the air. This was a carefully calculated world, superlative neutrality.

The workers were dressed in pale grey from head to foot, overalls, gloves, shoes.
